Mulayam's jolt to Congress

Mulayam's jolt to Congress, releases list of candidates for 2014

Lucknow: Mulayam Singh Yadav has indicated he is ready for the elections. His Samajwadi Party released its list of candidates today, a good 18 months before the Lok Sabha polls are meant to take place. The 55 candidates on the list  today include Mr Yadav, whose constituency is Mainpuri, and his daughter-in-law  Dimple, who will ask voters to re-elect her from Kannuaj.

Mr Yadav's list will be interpreted by many as a sign that he does not expect the ruling UPA coalition to complete its term.  The government is in a minority since its main ally, Mamata Banerjee, dropped out in September over new economic reforms.  Since then the government is on life support courtesy Mr Yadav and his fierce rival Mayawati.  Both UP powerhouses do not participate in the government but lend external support.  The vote of their 43 MPs is crucial for the government to help    pass important legislation. The winter session of parliament begins on Thursday, November 22.
