ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளில் 6 தங்கப்பதக்கம் வென்ற ஆஸ்திரேலிய நீச்சல் வீரர் தேர்ப்-க்கு மனஅழுத்த நோய்

கடந்த 2000-த்தில் நடைபெற்ற ஒலிம்பிக் நீச்சல் போட்டிகளில் ஐந்து தங்கப் பதக்கங்களையும், 2004-ல் நடைபெற்ற ஏதென்ஸ் போட்டிகளில் ஒரு தங்கப்பதக்கத்தையும் பெற்று ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் புகழ் பெற்ற நீச்சல் வீரராக அறியப்பட்டவர் இயான் தோர்ப் (31). காமன்வெல்த் போட்டிகளில் 10 தங்கப்பதக்கங்களையும், 11 உலக சாம்பியன்ஷிப் பதக்கங்களையும் இவர் வென்றுள்ளார். ஆனால் பிரபலமான வாழ்க்கைமுறையும், தொடர்ந்த பயிற்சிகளும் அவரை 2006-ம் ஆண்டிலேயே தனது ஓய்வை அறிவிக்க வைத்தது. அதன்பின்னர் அவர் நகை வடிவமைப்பு மற்றும் தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் தனது நேரத்தை செலவிட்டார். 2012-ம் ஆண்டு ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளில் மீண்டும் பங்கு பெற வந்த தோர்ப் தகுதிச் சுற்றிலேயே தோல்வியடைய நேரிட்டது.

அந்த சமயங்களில்தான் அவர் மன அழுத்த நோய்க்கு ஆளானது வெளித்தெரிந்தது. அந்த சமயங்களில் வெளிவந்த அவரது சுயசரிதையில் குடிப்பழக்கத்துடன் தனக்கு நேர்ந்த போராட்டம் குறித்தும் அவர் விவரித்திருந்தார். இந்த நிலையில் சென்ற வாரம் கீழே விழ நேர்ந்ததில் தோள்பட்டையில் அவருக்கு ஒரு அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்ய நேர்ந்தது. மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த தோர்ப் மனஅழுத்தத்திற்காகவும், மதுப் பழக்கத்திற்காகவும் கூட சிகிச்சை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளுவதாக செய்திகள் பரவ அவருடைய மேலாளர் அதனை மறுத்திருந்தார்.

மீண்டும் நேற்று அதிகாலை சிட்னி வீதி ஒன்றில் தனது பெற்றோர் வீட்டிற்கு அருகிலேயே தன் நண்பருடைய கார் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டு தெருவோரம் நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கார் ஒன்றினுள் ஏற இயான் தோர்ப் முயற்சித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். இதனைக் கவனித்த அக்கம்பக்கத்தினர் காவல்துறைக்குத் தெரிவிக்க அவர்கள் தோர்ப்பை மருத்துவமனையில் கொண்டு சேர்த்துள்ளனர்.

தோள்பட்டை சிகிச்சைக்கான மருந்துகளையும், மன அழுத்தத்திற்கான மருந்துகளையும் தொடர்ந்து சாப்பிட்டுவருவதில் அவர் நிலை தடுமாறி உள்ளார் என்று அவரது தந்தை குறிப்பிட்டார். அங்கிருந்த மருத்துவர்களின் அறிவுரைப்படி தோர்ப் மறுவாழ்வு சிகிச்சைமையத்தில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் அவர் விரைவில் பூரண குணம் பெறுவார் என்றும் அவரது தந்தை நம்பிக்கை தெரிவித்தார்.

Cargo Ship Sinks Off Yemen Killing 12 Crew

A cargo ship sank off the coast of Yemen killing all 12 crew, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

The ship, which was carrying car tyres and car parts, ran aground on Thursday night but the incident did not come to the attention of Yemeni security until 10 hours later, its statement said.

Heavy winds and high waves prevented the rescue of the Indian sailors.

The ship was owned by a Yemeni and was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to Al Mukalla port in Yemen.

US doctor walks 10 km in snow to perform brain surgery

Houston:  Where there is a will, there is a way; an old adage was proved by a US surgeon who walked nearly 10 kilometres through snow to perform a life-saving brain surgery.

Dr Zenko Hrynkiw, the only brain surgeon at Trinity Medical Centre in Birmingham, was at a hospital when he was called at a different hospital for an unexpected, life-saving brain surgery.

According to reports, Hrynkiw tried to make the drive, but a sudden snowstorm unfortunately produced a traffic nightmare. He was only able to drive for a few blocks before it became clear that he would not be able to make it behind the wheel.

So, he walked about 10 kilometres to the hospital and then performed the surgery on a patient suffering from a traumatic brain injury.

According to a nurse Steve Davis, Hyrnkiw called up and said: "I'm walking".

On reaching, he spoke to the family of the patient and performed the surgery, Davis said.

"Without the surgery, the patient would have most likely died," hospital sources said.

Despite a light dusting of snow in the south on Tuesday, many cities were dealing with bad road conditions and terrible traffic, with some abandoning their cars on the roads and taking refuge in nearby stores.

Cong names Selja, Sanjay Singh for Rajya Sabha

Union minister Kumari Selja was on Tuesday named Congress nominee for Rajya Sabha elections, putting an end to speculation that former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit could be brought to the Upper House from Haryana.

Congress also nominated Sultanpur MP Sanjay Singh from Assam besides re-nominating Assam PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita from the state.

Dikshit was being talked about as a probable candidate from Haryana where several local leaders were also aspirants. Five names were suggested from Haryana.

The former Delhi chief minister was also being talked about as the probable nominee from Himachal Pradesh but there, too the high command brought Viplove Thakur as a candidate.

Sanjay Singh hails from Amethi and holds considerable influence there. Amethi is the constituency of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi while Sonia Gandhi contests from neighbouring Rae Bareli. There was earlier speculation that Singh could join the BJP.

Congress general secretaries Digvijaya Singh and Madhusudan Mistri were among five Congress nominees for Rajya Sabha elections announced yesterday.

From Andhra Pradesh, Congress re-nominated all the three sitting Rajya Sabha MPs, KVP Ramachandra Rao, MA Khan and T Subbarami Reddy. Khan hails from Hyderabad.

The party had on Sunday announced the names of seven candidates, including Motilal Vora, Murli Deora and Ranjib Biswal from Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha respectively. Hussain Dalwai was also re-nominated from Maharashtra.

Other nominees were Haji Abdul Salam from Manipur, and Wansuk Syiem from Meghalaya.

Tuesday is the last date for filing nominations for the February 7 polls and the scrutiny will be held tomorrow. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is January 31.

Maoists abduct five officials in Jharkhand

Suspected Maoists abducted five people in Jharkhand's Giridih district, police said on Saturday.

Three of the victims are members of the Prime Minister Rural Development Fellowship programme.

The abduction took place in Navkania village, around 300 km from Ranchi.

"We have launched an operation to free the abducted people," Kranti Kumar, the superintendent of police of Giridih, told IANS over telephone.

PM meets President Pranab Mukherjee, Arvind Kejriwal's protest features in talks

New Delhi:  As Delhi remains grid-locked by a stand-off between Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Delhi Police, the Prime Minister met President Pranab Mukherjee this evening and briefed him on Mr Kejriwal's sit-in protest, now in its second day.

Sources say the meeting was pre-scheduled to discuss the arrangements for Republic Day.   Mr Kejriwal's sit-in protest, now in its second day, is being held in the heart of the capital in a high-security zone that houses parliament, various ministries and the President's home, Rashtrapati Bhawan.

There is no question of any extreme steps like dismissing the government, sources told NDTV. "He is a Constitutional authority. We can only watch," they said.

The Republic Day parade involves missiles and tanks moving down the main avenue in a proud and patriotic display of India's military might.

The arrangements for those celebrations necessitate a security lock-down of the area that Mr Kejriwal has now turned into his camp. He spent the night in the cold on the road near his Wagon-R and woke up to chilly winds and rain, vowing, "This is not a 10-day protest. It could be infinite if we don't get what we have asked for."

Mr Kejriwal's demands involve what he describes as urgent police reforms. He wants the control of the Delhi Police to be transferred to his government from the Union Home Ministry, a point made by earlier chief ministers of Delhi as well. Mr Kejriwal, 45, also wants five police officers to be suspended immediately for failing to make a series of arrests ordered by his ministers. The police officers concerned have said they did not have warrants.

The Congress anchors the ruling coalition at the Centre. It is also propping up Mr Kejriwal's minority government in Delhi. Sources in the party say the Congress is determined not to withdraw that support because it could confer martyr status on Mr Kejriwal ahead of the national election. Instead, sources say the Congress wants him to stand exposed as a man more suited to leading demonstrations rather than a government.

Sanjay Dutt's parole extended by a month

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, in Mumbai on a month's leave from Pune's Yerwada Jail, has received an extension of his parole for a month. The actor, who was scheduled to return to prison on January 21, had applied for extension citing wife Maanyata's ill-health.

Manyata is reported to be suffering from multiple ailments of the heart and liver and was admitted to Global Hospital in Parel, south-central Mumbai, over a week ago for treatment.

Mr Dutt was previously granted an extension on his last leave from jail in October last year. He was granted two weeks leave on medical grounds on October 1 and an extension of another two weeks on October 14.

Mr Dutt had surrendered in a TADA court in Mumbai in May last year after the Supreme Court delivered a final verdict on the Bollywood actor's part in the bomb blasts that ripped Mumbai apart in 1993. Mr Dutt, who was sentenced to six years in jail in 2007, had his sentence reduced by a year. He had already served 18 months of his sentence and was sent to prison to serve the remaining 42 months left of the five-year jail term he was handed by the Supreme Court.

பொதுவுடமை தந்தை ப.ஜீவானந்தம் நம்மை விட்டு பிரிந்து 50 ஆண்டுகள் கரைந்தோடி விட்டன:இன்று நினைவு நாள்

பொதுவுடமை கட்சி என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்ட சோசலிச இயக்கத்தின் தனிப்பெரும் தலைவர்களில் ஒருவராக விளங்கிய ப. ஜீவானந்தம் நாகர்கோவில அடுத்த அடுத்த பூதப்பாண்டி என்ற கிராமத்தில் வாழ்ந்த  பட்டத்தார் - உமையம்மாள் தம்பதியரின் மகனாக 21-08-1907-ம் ஆண்டு பிறந்தார்.

அந்த கிராமத்தின் காவல் தெய்வமாக விளங்கிய-சொரிமுத்து என்றும் அய்யனார் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்ட குல தெய்வத்தின் நினைவாக தங்களது அருமை மகனுக்கு பெற்றோர் சொரிமுத்து என பெயர் சூட்டி மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

மகாத்மா காந்தியின் கொள்கைகள் இளம் வயதில் அவரை வெகுவாக கவர்ந்தது. சீர்திருத்த கொள்கைகளுடன் அந்நாட்களில் நாடகம் நடத்திவந்த அஞ்சாநெஞ்சன் விஸ்வநாத தாஸ் என்பவரோடு ஜீவா நெருங்கிப் பழகினார். சில நாடகங்களையும் அவருக்காக எழுதிக் கொடுத்தார்.

நாடகம் எழுதித் தயாரிக்கும் ஆற்றலுடன் ஒன்பதாவது வகுப்பில் படிக்கும்போதே காந்தியையும், கதரையும் பற்றியமுதல் கவிதையையும் எழுதினார்.

பத்தாம் வகுப்பு படித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது "சுகுணராஜன் அல்லது சுதந்தரவீரன்" என்ற நாவலை எழுதினார். "ஞானபாஸ்கரன்" என்ற நாடகத்தை அவரே எழுதித் தயாரித்து அரங்கேற்றியதுடன் அந்த நாடகத்தில் நடிக்கவும் செய்தார்.

ஒத்துழையாமை இயக்கம் நடத்துவதற்காக போது அழைப்பு வந்த போது காந்திஜியின் கட்டளைப்படி அன்னியத் துணிகள் அணிவதை ஒழித்தல் என்ற திட்டத்தின் கீழ், திட்டுவிளை கிராமத்தில் தேசபக்தர் திருகூடசுந்தரம் பிள்ளையின் அன்னியத் துணி எதிர்ப்புப் பிராசாரக் கூட்டம் நடைபெற்றது. அவருடைய பேச்சு ஜீவாவைக் கவர்ந்தது. அன்று முதல் தனது இற்தி மூச்சு இருந்த வரை அவர் கதர் ஆடைகளையே விரும்பி அணிந்தார்.

வன்முறையில் நம்பிக்கையற்ற கொள்கை உடையவராக இருந்தபோதிலும் விடுதலைப் போரில் பங்கேற்ற மாவீரன் பகத் சிங்குக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட தூக்குத்தண்டனையை ஜீவாவால் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. இந்த கொடுமையை கண்டு கொதித்துப் போய் சீறி எழுந்தார். வெள்ளையர் ஆட்சிக்கெதிராக அவர் ஊர்,ஊராக சென்று கண்டன் கூட்டங்களில் முழங்க தொடங்கினார். எரிமலையின் சீற்றத்துக்கு நிகரான அவரது அனல் கக்கும் கண்டன உரைகள்  இளைஞர்களைக் பெரிதும் கவர்ந்தது.

பின்னர், பகத் சிங் தூக்கிலிடப்பட்ட போது சிறையிலிருந்து பகத் சிங் தன் தந்தைக்கு எழுதிய "நான் ஏன் நாத்திகனானேன்?" என்ற நூலினைத் தமிழில் மொழிபெயர்த்தார், ஜீவா. பகுத்தறிவு தந்தை ஈ.வெ.ரா. பெரியார் அதை வெளியிட்டார். இத்ற்காக ஜீவாவைக் கைதுசெய்த பிரிட்டிஷ் போலீசார், அவரது கை - கால்களில் சங்கிலியிட்டு வீதி வீதியாக இழுத்துச் சென்று திருச்சி சிறையில் அடைத்தனர்.

அந்த நிகழ்ச்சிக்குப் பிறகு ஜீவா முழுக்க முழுக்க பொதுவுடமை கொள்கைளால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டார்.

ஜீவாவின் தீண்டாமை ஒழிப்பு நடவடிக்கை அவரது ஊர் மக்களுக்கு ஆத்திரத்தை உண்டாக்கியது. மகனின் முழுநேர அரசியல் போக்கினால் அதிருப்தியடைந்த அவர்கள் ஜீவாவின் தந்தையை எதிர்த்தனர். ஜீவாவின் சார்பில் அவரது தந்தை ஊர் மக்களிடம் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டார்.

தன்மானம் மிக்கவரான ஜீவாவால் இதனை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. இருவருக்குமிடையே கடும் வாக்குவாதம் ஏற்பட்டது. தன் கொள்கையைத் துறக்க மறுத்து-குடும்பத்தைத் துறந்து வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறினார். அப்போது அவருக்கு வயது 17.

வ.வே.சு. அய்யர் நடத்திய தேசிய குருகுலத்தில் இளம் வயதிலேயே ஜீவானந்தம் ஆசிரியர் பணி புரிந்தார். எனினும்,அய்யரின் தீண்டாமைக் கொள்கையை ஏற்காத ஜீவா, அந்த ஆசிரமம் மூடப்பட்ட பிறகு காரைக்குடிக்கு அருகில், சிராவயல் என்ற ஊரில் காந்தி ஆசிரமத்தை உருவாக்கினார். வைக்கம் சத்தியாக்கிரகம், சுசீந்திரம் தீண்டாமை இயக்கம், சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம் போன்றவைகளில் தனிப் பங்கேற்றவர்.

வைக்கம் சத்தியாக்கிரகம், சுசீந்திரம் தீண்டாமை இயக்கம், சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம் போன்றவைகளிலும் இவரது பங்களிப்பு இன்றியமையாதது. தம்மை நாத்திகராக அறிவித்துக் கொண்டு, சிறந்த காந்தியவாதியாக, சுயமரியாதை இயக்க வீரராக, தமிழ்ப் பற்றாளராக, அனைத்திற்கும் மேலாக ஒரு பொதுவுடைமை இயக்கத் தலைவராக படிப்படியாக உயர்ந்த ஜீவா, கடலூர் சட்டமன்றத் தொகுதி ஹரிஜன வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்த காங்கிரஸ் எம்.எல்.ஏ. மகள் கண்ணம்மாவைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டார்.

ஆனால், அந்த அம்மையார் குமுதா என்ற பெண் மகவைப் பெற்றெடுத்த சில நாள்களில் காலமானார். அதன்பிறகு 1948ஆம் ஆண்டு பத்மாவதி என்னும் பெண்ணை கலப்புத் திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டார். உஷா, உமா என்ற இரு பெண் குழந்தைகளும் மணிக்குமார் என்ற மகனும் பிறந்தனர்.

கலை இலக்கிய உணர்வுள்ள ஜீவா பெரும் இலக்கியவாதியாகவும், பத்திரிகையாளராகவும் திகழ்ந்தார். குடியரசு, பகுத்தறிவு, புரட்சி, ஜனசக்தி, தாமரை ஆகிய பத்திரிகைகளில் கவிதைகளும் ஆய்வுக்கட்டுரைகளும் எழுதியுள்ளார். பாரதியின் பாதையைப் பின்பற்றி பாமரர்களை எழுச்சி பெறச் செய்த பாடல்கள் பலவற்றைப் பாடியவர். பொதுவுடைமை கட்சிக் கூட்டங்களில் முதல் முறையாகத் தமிழ் இலக்கியப் பெருமைகளை பேசி, தமிழ்க் கலாச்சாரத்தோடு, கட்சியை வளர்த்தவர்.

பொது வாழ்க்கையில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த ஜீவா, அடிக்கடி வெளியூருக்குச் சென்று மக்களைத் தன் உணர்ச்சிமிக்க சொற்களால் தட்டியெழுப்பும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டார். ஜீவா ரயிலிலிருந்து இறங்கும் போது அவரைக் கைது செய்யக் காவலர்கள் காத்திருப்பர். இத்தகைய வாழ்க்கைக்குத் தன்னை பக்குவப்படுத்திக் கொண்ட ஜீவாவின் துணைவியார் பத்மாவதி, "ஜீவா ஏறினா ரெயில்; இறங்கினா ஜெயில்!" என்று வேடிக்கையாக குறிப்பிடுவார்.

ஏறத்தாழ நாற்பது ஆண்டுகள் பொது வாழ்க்கையில் ஈடுபட்டு தியாகங்கள் பல புரிந்த பொதுவுடமைத் தலைவரான ஜீவா, சுமார் பத்து ஆண்டுகளை சிறையில் கழித்தார்.


அப்பழுக்கற்ற நேர்மை, தன்னலம் கருதாத தொண்டுள்ளம், எதற்கும் அஞ்சாத வைர நெஞ்சம், கொண்ட கொள்கையில் இருந்து தடம் புரளாத நெஞ்சுறுதி படைத்த ஜீவாவின் எளிய வாழ்க்கையை இன்றைய இளைய தலைமுறையினர் உணர்ந்துக் கொள்ள அவரது வாழ்வில் நிகழ்ந்த ஓரிரு சம்பவங்களை இன்று பகிர்ந்து கொள்வது மிக பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும்.

சென்னைக்கு வருவதற்காகக் கோவை ரயில் நிலையத்தில் தோழர் ஒருவருடன் ஜீவா காத்திருந்தார். கையில் பெரிய பணமூட்டை. அது, கட்சிக்காக அன்றைய பொழுது திரட்டப்பட்ட நிதி. காலையிலிருந்து ஜீவாவும் அவருடைய தோழரும் கொலைப் பட்டினி. அலைச்சலால் ஏற்பட்ட அசதி வேறு! ஜீவாவிடம் அந்தத் தோழர், "பசி வயிற்றைக் கிள்ளுது. சாப்பிடலாமா?" என்றார். "சாப்பிடலாமே ! ஆனால், காசு எது?" என்றார் ஜீவா. "அதுதான் உங்கள் கையில் பெரிய பணமூட்டை உள்ளதே " என்றார் அந்த தோழர்.

ஜீவாவுக்கு தூக்கி வாரிப்போட்டது. "என்ன பேசுறீங்க... அது மக்கள் கொடுத்த பொதுப் பணம். அதிலிருந்து ஒரு காசு கூட எடுக்கக் கூடாது" என்று உறுதியாக மறுத்துவிட்டார் ஜீவா. பின்பு, அங்கு வந்த தோழர் ஒருவர் இருவருக்கும் சிற்றுண்டி வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தார்.

தற்கால அரசியல்வாதிகள் போலன்றி, அரசியலில் எதிரெதிர் துருவங்களாக இருந்தபோதிலும் காமராஜரும் ஜீவாவும் ஒருவர் மீது மற்றவர் அளவுகடந்த அன்பும் பெருமதிப்பும் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

சென்னை மாகாண முதலமைச்சராக பெருந்தலைவர் காமராஜர் பதவி வகித்த காலத்தில், தாம்பரம் வழியாகச் செல்லும்போது காரை ஜீவாவின் குடிசை வீட்டுக்கு விடச் சொல்வார். அவ்வாறு ஒருமுறை காமராஜர் ஜீவாவின் வீட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்த போது, ஜீவா நான்கு முழ வேட்டியின் ஒருமுனையை மரத்தில் கட்டிவிட்டு, மற்றொரு முனையைக் கையில் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு வெயிலில் காய வைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். உடனே, வசதியில்லாமல் வாழ்ந்த ஜீவாவுக்கு நான்கு ஜோடி வேட்டி, முழங்கைச் சட்டைகளை நட்புரிமையுடன் வாங்கித் தந்தார் காமராஜர்.

பாரதிதாசன், பெரியார், அண்ணா, எம்.ஜி.ஆர், எம்.ஆர்.ராதா, என்,எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணன், ம.பொ.சி என கட்சி பாகுபாடு இல்லாமல் அனைவரையும் அன்புடனும் நட்புடனும் நேசித்தவர் ஜீவா.

ப.ஜீவானந்தத்தை பற்றி உலகத் தமிழ் மாநாட்டு சிறப்பு மலரில் அந்நாள் தமிழ்நாடு முதல் அமைச்சர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். எழுதும் போது "பொதுவுடைமைப் பெருந்தகை தோழர் ஜீவாவை கலைவாணர் என்,எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணன் மூலமாக ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் அறிமுகம் செய்துகொள்ளும் பேறு பெற்றேன்" என்று பெருமையாகக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

சென்னை வண்ணாரப்பேட்டைத் தொகுதியிலிருந்து வென்று சட்டமன்றத்திற்கு சென்றார் ஜீவா. 1952 முதல் 1957 வரை எம்.எல்.ஏ.வாக பதவி வகித்த காலகட்டத்தில் குலக் கல்வித் திட்டத்துக்கு ஏற்பட்ட எதிர்ப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து ராஜாஜி பதவி விலகினார். 1954 ஏப்ரலில் காமராஜர் முதலமைச்சர் ஆனார்.

Former law intern hints at filing police complaint against Justice Ganguly

NEW DELHI: A former law intern, who accused ex-Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly of sexual harassment, has hit back at him for denying the charges and hinted that she may file a police complaint.

"Those who have been spreading rumours and politicizing the issue, are doing so out of prejudice and malice to obfuscate the issue and escape scrutiny and accountability," the intern wrote on her blog on Legally India.

Her comments came a day after Justice Ganguly had written an eight-page letter to Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam, denying that he had sexually harassed the intern and alleging there was a "palpable design" to malign him because of the judgments he had given against "powerful quarters".

Indicating that she may lodge a police complaint, the intern said,"I request that it be acknowledged that I have the discernment to pursue appropriate proceedings at appropriate times. I ask that my autonomy be respected fully."

The intern said that any one claiming that her statements were false was showing disrespect not just to her but also to the Supreme Court. "I would like to state that I have acted with utmost responsibility throughout, keeping in mind the seriousness of this situation," she said.

Cong holds consultations with minorities on party's manifesto

NEW DELHI: Congress today held consultations with representatives from various minority communities, including Muslims, as part of its exercise to include demands and aspirations of sections of people in its 2014 election manifesto.

Party Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan, among the senior leaders, are holding direct interactions with the communities to incorporate their views and suggestions in the party's manifesto for the next Lok Sabha polls.

he exercise comes in line with Gandhi's call for "opening the doors and windows of politics" for common man in formulating policies and programmes of the government as the party sought to reach out to the people directly in the manifesto-making exercise by launching a website to seek direct feedback from the public.

As a prelude, Gandhi had held a meeting with representatives of Dalits, tribal and OBCs on December 13 to discuss the social, political and economic challenges before the communities and formulate programmes to address them.

Addressing the meeting of Dalits, tribals and OBCs, Gandhi had said that politics was so far being done from behind the closed doors and windows and the political process was restricted to some 500-odd people.

"It is a narrow elite, which constitutes the political establishment and each party is run by a narrower group," he had said, promising to open the system.

The consultation process called "Your Voice Our Pledge" has been started witha view to help shape the pan-India agenda of the manifesto.

Addressing the media after that meeting, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh had said that the manifesto will be ready by the first week of February and it will be open for public discussion for the next one-and-a-half months thereafter.

Five such consultations are being organised by the party with various sections including SC/ST/OBC, minorities, women and youth.

Virat Kohli loses top spot to AB de Villiers in ICC ODI rankings

Dubai:  Virat KohliStar batsman Virat Kohli lost his top position to AB de Villiers while most of his teammates, barring skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also slipped in the latest ICC one-day rankings issued on Thursday after the 0-2 series loss to South Africa.

India, in fact, dropped two ratings points but held on to the top spot with 120 ratings points, while South Africa continued to be in fifth place with 110 ratings points, with a gain of three points.

Dhoni remained static at sixth but Shikhar Dhawan was down a rung to 10th, while Rohit Sharma found himself 18th after losing three spots. Suresh Raina, who was 19th in the previous list, is now out of top-20 and is currently placed at 23rd.

In the bowling charts, Ravindra Jadeja was pushed to the seventh spot, a loss of four positions, while Ravichandran Ashwin ended up 17th after slipping three rungs.

For South Africa, leading the way is de Villiers, who had started the series in second spot behind India's Virat Kohli, trailing by 17 ratings points on the rankings for ODI batsmen.

But now de Villiers at 872 has not only regained the number-one rank, he has also opened up a 13 ratings points lead over Kohli.

De Villiers, who scored 189 runs in three completed innings during the series, was the second highest run-getter on either side with a top score of 109 in the final match.

De Villiers, who was named in both the ICC Test and ODI Teams of the Year in 2013, now heads both the Test and ODI batting tables. De Villiers had also been shortlisted for the People's Choice Award this year.

De Villiers is the third batsman from South Africa after Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla to head the Test and ODI batting tables at the same time, and the ninth player overall.

Amla achieved the distinction in February this year when he topped the charts after the Johannesburg Test against Pakistan. Amla, on the other hand, has moved up a place to third in the batting list.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Quinton de Kock has made the biggest gain in the latest rankings following his three successive hundreds in the series, jumping 61 places to a career-best 14th with a best-ever 672 ratings points.

De Kock became only the fifth batsman in history to score three successive ODI hundreds, to thereby end as the highest run-getter in the series with 342 runs. Outside the top-20, the batsmen to move up include JP Duminy in 24th (up by three), David Miller in 45th (up by 12) and Ravindra Jadeja in 71st (up by one).

Meanwhile, South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has continued his upward move in the ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers. Steyn has moved up three positions to second after claiming six wickets in the two ODIs that he played.

Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal continues to be number-one ranked on the rankings for ODI bowlers. The other two South Africa bowlers inside the top-10 are Lonwabo Tsotsobe in eighth (up by two) and Morne Morkel in ninth.

Meanwhile, Ryan McLaren has entered the top-20 of the bowling ranking for the first time, as he moved up two places to sit in 20th. Outside the top 20, the bowlers to advance up the rankings include Mohammed Shami in 43rd (up by seven) and Ishant Sharma in 51st (up by 16).

Market fire in China's Shenzhen kills 16

A fire in a farmers' fruit market in south China's Shenzhen has killed at least 16 people and injured at least three, officials say.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday and spread to an area of around 1,000 sq m (0.4 sq miles), the local fire department said.

It took around two hours to extinguish the fire. Around 145 firefighters were at the scene, officials said.

Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the blaze. The fire started at 01:30 local time (17:30 GMT) at the Rongjian Farmers' Market in Shenzhen's Gongming District, the Shenzhen fire department and Shenzhen emergency management office said on their verified microblog accounts.

The city deployed 29 fire engines, and the fire was extinguished at 03:00 local time (19:00 GMT), they added.

Search and rescue and clean-up operations were still under way at 08:00, the fire department said.

The market remained shut on Wednesday morning, while a main road near the market was closed off in both directions, state-run broadcaster CCTV said, citing one of its reporters.

Protest over parole for Sanjay Dutt outside Pune's Yerawada jail

Pune:  A group of Republican Party of India (RPI) activists demonstrated outside the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune today, protesting against the likely release of incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt on parole.

Waving black flags and banners, the RPI activists shouted slogans demanding that Dutt should not be granted parole and must be treated at par with any other prisoner.

Police deployment has been beefed up outside the jail since last night with the expected release of Dutt on parole, as his wife Maanyata Dutt is unwell.

Dutt, 54, had recently applied for a month's parole contending that he wanted to take care of his wife. The parole has been granted and he is awaiting release from the jail to return home to Mumbai.

However, Maanyata reportedly attended a film premier Thursday night and her pictures were splashed in various online media sporting a jeans and t-shirt.

This would be the third time that Dutt would come out on parole in the past three months.

Dutt had been granted a fortnight's parole for medical reasons Oct 1 which was extended by another 15 days. He returned to the jail on October 30.

The actor is presently serving the remaining 42 months of his five-year sentence for involvement in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Having served 18 months in jail as an undertrial, Dutt started his stint in the Yerawada jail May 16 this year. In the jail he has been employed in making paper bags which are sold outside through some NGOs.

Though he spent Diwali in jail along with the other inmates, he is likely to enjoy Christmas and New Year with his family.

Dutt has acted in movies like "Munnabhai M.B.B.S", "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" and "Agneepath" in the past few years.

Former Mysore ruler Srikantadatta Wodeyar dies

Bangalore:  Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar from the former royal family of Mysore and who was recently elected president of the Karnataka cricket association, died of a heart attack in Bangalore today.

Mr Wodeyar, 60, had the heart attack at his Bangalore home and efforts to revive him at a city hospital were not successful.

He was a former Congress MP from the Mysore constituency and also a fashion designer.

The son of the late Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, Srikantadatta was never officially a Maharaja, but many people in Mysore thought of him as one. He was a central figure in Mysore's celebration of Dasara and had participated in the festival in October this year.

Mr Wodeyar's wife Pramoda Devi Avaru is from the Bettada Kote Ursu family of the former princely state of Mysore. They have no children.

Mr Wodeyar played university level cricket and maintained his links with the game. He was elected president of the Karnataka Cricket Association last month.

A friend, Dr Dayanand Pai, said, "He wanted to help cricketers from rural areas and give them a chance. He recently told me how he wanted at least one from Karnataka in the Indian cricket team."

When Karnataka was reeling under severe drought last year, Mr Wodeyar had reached out to farmers and conducted prayers at the grounds of his Mysore palace.

Karnataka Home Minister K George said, "His contribution to preserve the culture of the state cannot be forgotten. Not just that he loved sports. As a politician too, he was very committed."

"Our last connection with the Mysore family is lost. He was a sincere man," said former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Telangana bill sent to President Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi/Hyderabad: The central government Friday sent to President Pranab Mukherjee the draft bill for formation of separate Telangana state.

The union home ministry sent the draft Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill to Rashtrapati Bhavan, a day after it was approved by the union cabinet, official sources said.

The president, who is on a tour to West Bengal, will have a look at the bill after his return to the national capital Sunday.

He will then refer the bill under Article 3 of the Constitution of India to Andhra Pradesh state assembly to send it back with its views within a prescribed time.

The draft bill will then go the union cabinet, which will give it a final shape for tabling the same in parliament.

It was not clear whether the bill would be tabled during parliament's winter session, which concludes Dec 20.

Congress general secretary incharge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh Friday said if the bill could not be tabled during the winter session, a special session would be convened.

Talking to reporters, he said whether the bill would come up during winter session or not would depend on the time the president would give to Andhra Pradesh assembly to respond with its comments.

"We can always call a special session," he said when asked what the government would do if the bill doesn't come up during the current session.

Mumbai court orders fresh trial in 2002 hit-and-run case against Salman Khan

Mumbai:  A Mumbai court today ordered fresh trial in a 2002 hit-and-run case against Hindi film actor Salman Khan.

Mr Khan had asked for a fresh trial after the charge against him was enhanced from "rash and negligent driving" to the more serious "culpable homicide not amounting to murder", which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.

The court today said all evidence and witnesses in the case will be re-examined. The trial is set to begin on December 23.

The 47-year-old actor had told the court that the evidence presented earlier before a magistrate should be discarded as he was now facing a more serious charge. The prosecution had argued against fresh trial, saying it was a "stalling tactic."

In September 2002, Mr Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.

The case has gone from court to court with arguments centred around whether Mr Khan was driving the car that day or not. The Mumbai police say they have enough evidence against him.

In 1998, Salman Khan spent three days in prison for killing a black buck, an endangered species of deer, in Rajasthan.

The actor has starred in many Bollywood blockbusters for two decades and is considered one of the biggest commercial draws at the box office.

Cong rejects Modi's call for debate on Art 370

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) Dismissing his call for a debate on Article 370 of the Constitution, Congress today advised Narendra Modi to discuss the issue first with Sangh Parivar, saying there is already "clarity" in the ruling party about it.

    Party General Secretary Digvijay Singh also said that he "does not take Modi's statement very seriously" as the BJP's Prime Miisterial candidate "keeps changing" it from one place to another.

    Alluding to recent gaffes of Modi in rallies related to historical events, Singh said that the Gujarat Chief Minister is "unaware of history" and has been speaking "untruth" on many issues.

    "As far as my party is concerned, there in clarity on the issue (of Article 370 giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir). If Modi wants to debate, he should debate it within BJP and the Sangh. We have no objection if Modi, BJP and the Sangh debate it within them. We have no objection if they want a public debate...," Singh said.

    In what appeared a somewhat softening of BJP's stand for scrapping Article 370, Modi had yesterday said that there should be at least a debate on whether or not it has benefited J-K.

    Addressing his first rally in Jammu after being named the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, he had said his party wanted a discussion on various aspects of the constitutional provision.

    Union Minister Manish Tewari was quick to dismiss Modi's remarks, saying it reveals BJP's doublespeak.

    "The manner they speak about Article 370 and Article 371 makes me conclude that they neither read the Constitution of India nor they have cared about detail....

    They (Modi's remark) "completely reveal their (BJP's) doublespeak. 10 years ago, five years ago, one year ago you would hear BJP talking about abrogating Article 370. Now they are talking about debate on Article 370," he had said

நேற்றுமுன்தினம் அதிகாலை அந்த சிறைச்சாலைக்கு அடையாளம் தெரியாத துப்பாக்கி ஏந்திய மர்ம நபர்கள் வந்துள்ளனர். சிறைச்சாலையின் முன்புறப்பகுதிகளில் கண்மூடித்தனமாக சுட்டுக்கொண்டே வந்த அவர்கள் அங்கு சிறை வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கைதிகளைத் தேடினர். அவர்களைக் கண்டுபிடித்ததும் அவர்களிலிருந்து பலரைக் கடத்திச் சென்றனர். சிறையின் இயக்குநர் நாசிர் ஷாபான் இத்தகவலைத் தெரிவித்தார். இவர்களில் பலர் மீண்டும் தாங்களாகவே திரும்பி வந்துள்ளதாகவும் அவர் கூறினார்.

லிபியாவின் காவல்துறையினரும், ராணுவத்தினரும் தற்போது பயிற்சி முகாம்களில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பதால் அங்கு இதுபோன்ற சிறைத் தகர்ப்பு சம்பவங்கள் நடைபெறுவது சகஜமாக இருக்கின்றது. இவர்களின் பாதுகாப்பிற்கு அரசு, புரட்சிப் போராளிகளையே நம்பியிருக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. கடந்த 2011-ம் ஆண்டில் லிபியாவின் அதிபர் முயம்மர் கடாபியைப் பதவியிலிருந்து இறக்க அரசு ராணுவத்திற்கு உதவி புரிந்த இத்தகைய தனியார் புரட்சி இயக்கங்கள் பல நேரங்களில் சட்டத்தினை மீறியும் செயல்பட்டுவருகின்றன. ஆனால், இத்தகைய இயக்கங்களை அரசால் கட்டுப்படுத்தவும் முடியவில்லை என்பதே பிரச்சினைக்குரிய விஷயமாகவும் இருக்கின்றது.
