BJP

New Delhi, BJP today termed the decision of a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh banning love marriages and restricting movement of women out of homes as "wrong" and "against the law" and asked the state government to intervene in the matter. "The decision of a Baghpath panchayat imposing restrictions on women is wrong and against the law. Whenever any such action is taken, the government must intervene," BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

She said it was a violation of women rights and demanded intervention from the state government against the panchayat for announcing such decisions. In Taliban-style diktats, a panchayat has banned love marriages and barred women below 40 from going out for shopping and using mobile phones outside their homes, an action deprecated by the Centre which asked UP government to ensure that such "illegal" orders are not enforced.
