Colombo: If India can manage to blank Sri Lanka 5-0 in the upcoming One-day series, it will jump to top spot in the ICC rankings from the current fourth spot.
India last held the number one position briefly in September 2009 but if it achieves a clean sweep against the hosts, it will unseat the current table-toppers Australia.
The series, which starts in Hambantota on Saturday, brings together the finalists in the 2011 World Cup. India had won that match by six wickets to lift the trophy for the first time in 28 years.
After years of domination by Australia, the ODI Team rankings table is now extremely tight after Michael Clarke’s team suffered a 4-0 defeat in England.
Only two rating points separate the top four teams with South Africa (118) and England (118) sandwiched between Australia (119) and fourth placed India (117).
