Assam wants CBI to probe ethnic clashes; death toll 73

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced today that his government wants the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the ethnic clashes in the state that have left over 70 people dead and over four lakh homeless.

"We have decided to hand over the probe to the CBI. Lot of forces are involved in the violence that is taking place in the state. We need a fair probe," the minister said. The announcement came a day after fresh incidents of violence were reported from Kokrajhar - the epicenter of the riots.

Last night, at least three people were killed after armed gunmen opened fire in Kokrajhar's Ranighuli village. The miscreants could not be arrested.
