Mandya Karnataka

Farmers stage agitation ahead of Cauvery Regulatory Authority meeting

Mandya (Karnataka): Local farmers staged an agitation in Mandya on Tuesday against the release of water to Tamil Nadu and demanded 'justice' for Karnataka at the Cauvery Regulatory Authority meeting at New Delhi on Wednesday. Farmers' leaders took out a procession and staged a dharna, criticising the Centre for its "step-motherly" attitude towards the state.

The protesters said they would decide on their future course of action after knowing the decision taken at the CRA meeting. Hundreds of farmers from Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan districts, coming under the Cauvery catchment area had participated in a dharna on Monday. The protesting farmers, led by KRRS President K S Puttannaiah, had demanded the state panel ask CRA to evolve a distress water sharing formula between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, based on ground realities.
