The National Democratic Alliance has called for a nationwide shutdown on September 20 to protest against the government's decision to hike diesel prices and allow foreign investment in the retail sector. The BJP-led alliance has opposed the government's new round of economic reforms, claiming that these will affect the common man.
The Samajwadi Party, TDP, BJD, the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and the Left parties will seprately hold nationwide protests on Sep 20 against the economic reforms. In what could turn out to be the seeds of a possible Third Front, leaders of eight parties called for "hartals, picketing, demonstrations and court arrest programmes" that day.
